Originally consisting of two separate villages, Berkel and Rodenrijs, the area has a shared history rooted in peat extraction and agriculture. During the 19th and 20th centuries, the settlement evolved into a major center for greenhouse horticulture, known as part of the 'Glass District'. The region is characterized by its strategic location between Rotterdam and The Hague, which has led to massive population growth and its transformation into a popular commuter town in recent decades. Despite urbanization, Berkel en Rodenrijs has preserved many green spaces and waterways that recall the original polder landscape. The connection to the RandstadRail network has further strengthened its integration into the Randstad urban area, while the town continues to maintain its own distinct small-town character.
