Haarlemmerliede Ridges (Netherlands)

Weather…

The Haarlemmerliede Ridges are geological formations east of Haarlem, identified as ancient beach ridges (strandwallen) from the North Sea coast. These sandy elevations were formed between 5,000 and 3,000 years ago as the rate of sea-level rise slowed, allowing sediments to deposit parallel to the shoreline of that era. In contrast to the surrounding low-lying polders, these ridges sit slightly higher, making them historically preferred sites for settlements and roads due to their protection from flooding. Today, the landscape features a mosaic of meadows, small woodlands, and canals, with the original sandy soil structure still evident in many places. The ridges are part of the Spaarnwoude recreational area and provide a vital habitat for various meadow birds. Their presence gives direct evidence of the dynamic coastal evolution of the Netherlands throughout the Holocene epoch.
