Haarlem Dune Valley (Netherlands)

Weather…

The Haarlem Dune Valley is an integral part of the Zuid-Kennemerland National Park in the province of North Holland. This geological formation was created by complex aeolian processes over millennia, with wind and tides shaping the sand into characteristic valleys and dune ridges. Historically, these valleys played a crucial role in Haarlem's drinking water supply, acting as natural filtration systems for rainwater. Today, the area is home to exceptional biodiversity, including rare plant species and wild horses that help maintain the open heath landscape. The dune system serves as an important coastal protection barrier against the North Sea and is accessible via an extensive network of hiking trails. Geomorphologically, the valley is characterized by calcareous soils that support a specific flora rarely found in other parts of the Netherlands.

🧭
Getting there
The Haarlem Dune Valley is excellently accessible by bicycle or on foot directly from Haarlem. Its urban edge location makes it a highly popular excursion destination for locals.
📅
Best season
This moist dune landscape is highly attractive all year round, but especially in early summer. After heavy rains, however, the lower-lying areas can sometimes become flooded.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The relief consists of moist depressions and sandy hills, often crossed by very narrow paths. The walking tracks are mostly sandy and require slightly more effort when walking.
🎒
What to bring
Robust, water-resistant shoes are highly recommended for navigating the damp valleys. In summer, be sure to bring good sun protection and plenty of drinking water with you.
🅿️
Parking
Parking spaces can be found on the edges of the adjacent residential areas of Haarlem. It is often much easier to arrive by public transport or simply rent a local bicycle.
⚠️
Safety
Since wild animals and sensitive plant species live here, dogs should usually be kept on a leash. Always stay on the marked paths in order to completely prevent soil erosion.
