The Old Fort in Grootfontein is a historical defense structure erected in 1896 by the German colonial protection force (Schutztruppe). It originally functioned as a military station to secure the region and as a strategic base for colonial administration in northern Namibia. The architecture is characterized by massive stone walls and a rectangular layout, typical of military fortifications from the German colonial era. Following its military decommissioning, the building served various purposes before undergoing extensive restoration in 1983 to be opened as a public museum. Today, the museum features exhibits on local history, regional geology, and the cultures of the San and Damara peoples. As a declared national monument, the fort preserves vital evidence of early urban development and the intricate history of settlement within this fertile region of the Otavi Triangle.
