Turnhalle Building
The Turnhalle building in Windhoek holds major political and historical significance for Namibia. It was built in 1909 as a gymnasium (Turnhalle) for the city's German community. The neoclassical-style building was later significantly expanded. It rose to historical prominence in the 1970s when it became the venue for the Turnhalle Constitutional Conference (1975-1977). This conference brought together various political and ethnic groups (excluding SWAPO) to draft a constitution for an independent Namibia under South African supervision. Although the conference's outcomes were ultimately rejected by the UN, it was a significant step on the road to independence. Today, the building is part of a larger complex housing offices and shops, but its role in Namibian history remains recognized.
