Mrauk U (Myanmar (Burma))

Weather…

Mrauk U served as the capital of the powerful Arakanese Kingdom from 1430 to 1785, flourishing as a major maritime trade hub between Bengal and the Southeast Asian hinterland. Unlike the brick stupas of Bagan, the architecture here is characterized by massive stone-walled temples designed to withstand the region's heavy monsoon rains and potential military sieges. The Shite-thaung Temple, built in 1535, remains the site's most significant structure, featuring a labyrinthine interior decorated with thousands of stone carvings depicting Buddhist motifs and court life. At its height, the city was home to over 120.000 residents and maintained a cosmopolitan atmosphere with Portuguese, Dutch, and Japanese mercenaries serving the king. The kingdom eventually fell to the Konbaung Dynasty in 1784, leading to a slow decline and the eventual abandonment of many religious structures. Today, the archaeological site covers approximately 7 square kilometers and is recognized for its unique blend of Indian and Southeast Asian architectural influences.
