Kyaukpyu lies on Ramree Island in Rakhine State on Myanmar's western coast, with around 21,000 inhabitants. The town has one of Myanmar's most important deep-sea ports and is the terminus of the 793-kilometre China-Myanmar pipeline, which has carried energy from the Indian Ocean to Kunming since 2013 (gas) and 2017 (oil), sparing China the long detour through the Strait of Malacca. Ramree Island was the scene in February 1945 of the notorious 'Battle of Ramree', in which, according to contested reports, around 1,000 Japanese soldiers were said to have been killed by saltwater crocodiles in the mangrove swamps - an event recorded in the Guinness Book of Records but historically questionable. During British Burma (1886-1948) Kyaukpyu was an administrative post. Since 2015 a 1,700-hectare Chinese special economic zone has been under construction - a key project of the New Silk Road.
