Gorongosa Mountains

The Gorongosa Mountains (Serra da Gorongosa) in central Mozambique are an isolated granitic massif rising dramatically above the surrounding plains. The highest peak, Mount Gogogo, reaches an elevation of 1,863 meters. The mountains act as a vital watershed for the Gorongosa National Park, intercepting moist winds from the Indian Ocean and feeding perennial streams. The slopes are covered with unique Afromontane rainforests that transition into grass savannas at lower elevations. This ecological diversity hosts numerous endemic species of animals and plants found nowhere else on Earth. Despite the devastation during the civil war, the mountains are now a hub for scientific research and conservation. The restoration of forest areas on the mountain is a key project for securing the entire ecosystem of the Pungwe Basin and the adjacent national park.
