The Buzi River is a vital waterway in central Mozambique, originating in the eastern highlands near the border with Zimbabwe and flowing into the Indian Ocean after a course of approximately 250 kilometers. Its drainage basin covers about 31,000 square kilometers and is characterized by fertile alluvial plains, which are crucial for the cultivation of sugarcane and maize. Historically, the river was an important transport route for trade in the hinterland of Beira. The hydrology of the Buzi is marked by strong seasonal fluctuations, and severe floods, such as those caused by Cyclone Idai in 2019, have durably altered the geography of the river delta. The flora along the river course varies from dense riparian forests to extensive mangrove swamps at its mouth near the city of Beira. In modern times, the river plays a central role in irrigation projects and the provision of water for the local population. In terms of fauna, the Buzi provides a habitat for hippos, crocodiles, and a variety of fish species that form the basis of local fishing. The river is also an important ecological corridor connecting various conservation areas in central Mozambique.

Access to the river's course is generally via bridge crossings or small unpaved paths originating from nearby villages in central Mozambique. The estuary region is frequently more accessible via paved main roads.

The absolute best season for exploration is the dry season because the river level remains largely predictable. During heavy rainy seasons, the river frequently bursts its banks and heavily floods vast tracts of land.

Terrain & paths

The bank areas can be densely overgrown, muddy, and highly impassable. Developed hiking trails along the water are generally non-existent, forcing visitors to rely heavily on the narrow footpaths used by fishermen.

What to bring

Sturdy footwear to combat slippery mud and highly effective insect repellent are strictly imperative near the river. When taking boat excursions, proper attention must be paid to adequate sun protection and life jackets.

Vehicles can typically only be parked safely within the adjacent settlements or directly near major river crossings. It is strongly recommended to politely ask local residents before leaving your car parked completely unattended.

Due to potential unseen currents and native wildlife, such as crocodiles or hippos, extreme caution is mandatory when approaching the banks. Bathing or swimming in the river water is generally not recommended at all.
