Sena Railway Hub (Mozambique)

Weather…

The Sena Railway Hub is a critical component of Mozambique's infrastructure, connecting the coal-rich Tete region to the Port of Beira. Stretching approximately 575 kilometers, the Sena Line was originally constructed in the early 20th century to transport agricultural products and minerals. During the Mozambican Civil War, the line was almost entirely destroyed and remained out of service for over two decades. Following extensive reconstruction and modernization, the line was officially reopened in 2011 to accommodate the massive export demands of the Moatize coal mines. A historical and architectural highlight of the route is the Dona Ana Bridge across the Zambezi River, which was once the longest railway bridge in Africa. The railway yard near Beira serves as a vital logistical center for sorting and managing the heavy freight trains arriving from the interior. Today, the Sena Line is essential for the economic development of central Mozambique and provides landlocked regions with access to the Indian Ocean.
