Grande Hotel Beira (Mozambique)

Weather…

The Grande Hotel Beira was once known as the proudest and most luxurious hotel in Africa. Opened in 1954, it was designed to reflect the wealth and status of Portuguese colonial rule, featuring 110 luxury rooms, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, and grand ballrooms. However, the hotel never achieved financial success and officially closed its doors to guests in 1963. During the Mozambican Civil War, the massive structure served as a military base and later became a sanctuary for thousands of refugees. Today, the Grande Hotel is often described as a 'vertical slum,' housing an estimated 2,000 to 3,000 residents living in precarious conditions without running water or electricity. Despite the severe decay, the monumental scale and architectural details of the building are still visible. It stands as a haunting monument to the rise and fall of colonial dreams and the socio-economic challenges of modern Mozambique.
