Goa Island Lighthouse (Mozambique)

Weather…

The lighthouse on Goa Island (Ilha de Goa) is the oldest lighthouse in Mozambique, strategically located at the entrance to the channel leading to the Island of Mozambique. Established in 1876, it was built to guide ships toward what was then the country's most vital port, replacing more primitive signaling systems used in earlier times. The distinctive white, square-shaped tower stands approximately 31 meters tall and was constructed according to the designs of Portuguese engineer Francisco Maria d'Oliveira Pimentel. Goa Island itself is a small coral island renowned for its scenic beauty and its historical role in maritime navigation. The lighthouse is an outstanding example of 19th-century colonial architecture and testifies to the importance Portugal placed on securing shipping routes in the Indian Ocean. Visitors reaching the island by boat appreciate the striking contrast between the brilliant white tower and the deep blue waters of the ocean. The lighthouse remains operational today, serving as a key navigational aid for the Nampula region. It is intimately linked to the history of the Island of Mozambique, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
