Chapel of Nossa Senhora de Baluarte (Mozambique)

Weather…

The Chapel of Nossa Senhora de Baluarte, built in 1522, is widely considered the oldest European building in the Southern Hemisphere. It is located at the extreme northern tip of the Island of Mozambique, perched on the rocks just below the walls of Fort São Sebastião. The small chapel was constructed in the Manueline style, a Portuguese late Gothic architecture characterized by maritime motifs and intricate stonework. It served as a vital place of prayer for Portuguese sailors on the perilous maritime route to India. Despite its vulnerable position facing the Indian Ocean, the vaulted stone structure has survived for over five centuries. The chapel remains a profound symbol of the early European encounter with East Africa and is a key site within the island's UNESCO World Heritage designation.
