Fort of São Sebastião (Mozambique)

Weather…

The Fort of São Sebastião on the Island of Mozambique is the oldest complete fort still standing in sub-Saharan Africa. Construction began in 1558 to protect the strategic maritime route to India against Dutch and English incursions. Its massive walls were constructed using coral limestone quarried on the island, though some stone was brought from Portugal as ship ballast. Inside its perimeter lies the Chapel of Nossa Senhora de Baluarte, recognized as the oldest European building in the Southern Hemisphere. As a centerpiece of the Island's UNESCO World Heritage status, the fort represents centuries of Portuguese naval dominance in the Indian Ocean. Its architectural layout combines Renaissance military science with Manueline aesthetic details, having withstood numerous historic sieges.
