Fortaleza de São Sebastião (Mozambique)

Weather…

The Fortaleza de São Sebastião, located on the northern tip of the Island of Mozambique, is the oldest complete fort in sub-Saharan Africa. Construction began in 1558 under Portuguese rule and was completed around 1608, utilizing stone blocks brought from Portugal as ballast in ships. The fortress was strategically designed in a late Renaissance style to protect the lucrative maritime trade route between Lisbon and the East Indies. Its massive limestone walls successfully withstood several sieges by the Dutch and English fleets during the 17th century. Within the fortification stands the Chapel of Nossa Senhora de Baluarte, built in 1522, which is considered the oldest European building in the Southern Hemisphere. Today, as a centerpiece of a UNESCO World Heritage site, the fort serves as a powerful symbol of colonial architecture and the complex history of the Indian Ocean spice trade. The site has a panoramic view of the surrounding turquoise waters, preserving a legacy of five centuries of naval history.
