Church of Santo António da Polana
The Church of Santo António da Polana in Maputo is one of the most extraordinary examples of modernist sacred architecture in the world. Completed in 1962, the building was designed by architect Nuno Craveiro Lopes and is famously nicknamed the 'Lemon Squeezer' due to its unique conical shape. The structure is defined by a bold, folded concrete roof that resembles an inverted flower or a stylized tent, creating a powerful sense of verticality. Built during a period of significant architectural experimentation in colonial Mozambique, the church represents a radical departure from traditional ecclesiastical forms. Inside, the space is illuminated by light filtering through glass mosaics embedded in the triangular roof sections, creating a spiritual and ethereal atmosphere. Today, Santo António da Polana is recognized as a masterwork of 20th-century African modernism and is a major draw for architecture enthusiasts. Despite its avant-garde design, it remains a dedicated place of worship for the Catholic community in the Polana district.
