Massingir is a strategically important town located in the western part of Gaza Province, near the border with South Africa. It is internationally recognized for the Massingir Dam, which impounds the Rio dos Elefantes (Olifants River) to create one of Mozambique's largest artificial reservoirs. The dam was originally commissioned in the 1970s to regulate water flow for the massive irrigation projects downstream in Chókwè. Geographically, Massingir serves as a primary gateway to the Limpopo National Park, an integral part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park that connects with South Africa's Kruger National Park. The landscape is dominated by dry mopane woodlands and savannahs, hosting a diverse range of wildlife that fuels a growing ecotourism industry. Historically, the continuous maintenance and expansion of the dam's capacity have been critical for regional water security. Local livelihoods revolve around commercial fishing in the reservoir and livestock farming. In recent years, Massingir has also become a central hub for international wildlife conservation efforts and anti-poaching initiatives.
