Chibuto is a prominent city located in the Gaza Province of southern Mozambique, serving as the administrative center of the Chibuto District. The town is situated on a plateau overlooking the Limpopo Valley and has historical ties to both agriculture and mining sectors. During the colonial era, Chibuto functioned as an important administrative hub and a collection point for agricultural produce such as rice and grains. In recent decades, the city has gained global recognition due to the discovery of vast deposits of heavy mineral sands, specifically ilmenite and rutile. This led to the establishment of one of the largest mines of its kind, fundamentally shifting the economic profile of the region toward heavy industry. Despite industrial growth, the district remains a vital agricultural zone for cashew production and livestock farming. The city maintains efficient road links to the EN1 national highway, facilitating trade with the capital, Maputo. Chibuto is also recognized for its lively local culture and plays a central role in the social fabric of Gaza Province.
