Massingir Dam (Mozambique)

Weather…

The Massingir Dam, located on the Rio dos Elefantes (Olifants River) in Gaza Province, is a strategic water infrastructure project for irrigation and flood control. Construction began in 1972 under Portuguese rule and was completed in 1977 following Mozambique's independence. The dam is an earth-fill embankment structure stretching approximately 4.6 kilometers in length. The resulting reservoir borders the Limpopo National Park, playing a crucial role in the local ecosystem and the agricultural development of the Limpopo Valley. In 2008, the dam suffered a major failure of its bottom outlet pipes, leading to extensive rehabilitation work funded by international partners, including the African Development Bank. Today, it facilitates the irrigation of over 90,000 hectares of farmland and helps stabilize the water supply in southern Mozambique. A small hydroelectric component also exists to contribute to regional power generation.
