To meet growing industrial demands, the new 'Safi West' port was recently inaugurated, specifically designed to serve the new thermal power plant and relieve pressure on the historic urban port. The traditional harbor remains a bustling center for artisanal fishing and is world-famous for its exports of traditional ceramics, for which Safi is the national center. The port of Safi is a major hub for fishing as well as for the export of minerals and chemical products. It plays a central role in Morocco's trade balance and supplies raw materials to local industry.
Visiting
The port area is partially accessible to the public, but certain security zones are closed off. Visitors can watch the bustling activity of fishing boats and cargo ships from the quays.
Where to view it
The best view of the port is from the Safi lighthouse, from which you can overlook the entire harbor basin. The nearby Ksar El Bahr fortress also provides an excellent view of the berths.
Local products
Fresh catch is landed directly at the port and sold on the fish market. Minerals and chemicals from the region, such as phosphates, are also shipped here, but are not for retail.
