Khasagt-Khairkhan is a strictly protected mountain range in western Mongolia, forming a significant part of the Gobi-Altai mountain system. The protected area, established in 1995, spans approximately 274,000 hectares and reaches its highest point at 3,578 meters above sea level. Geologically, the range is composed of Paleozoic limestone and shales, featuring dramatic ridges, deep canyons, and karst formations created by millions of years of tectonic activity. The primary conservation goal of the reserve is to protect the habitat of the endangered snow leopard and the Siberian ibex, alongside various rare alpine plant species. The ecological zones range from dry steppes at the mountain base to high-altitude alpine meadows and tundra at the summits. Archaeological evidence, such as ancient rock carvings and burial mounds, indicates that the area has been a site of human activity since the Bronze Age. The region experiences a harsh continental climate with cold, snowy winters and brief summers, which has historically limited large-scale settlement. Today, Khasagt-Khairkhan stands as a bastion of biodiversity and a key research site for Central Asian montane ecology.
