Mandalgovi sits in the transition zone between the Mongolian steppe and the Gobi Desert at 1,393 metres above sea level and has served as the capital of Dundgovi (Middle Gobi) Province since 1942. The town has around 14,000 inhabitants and lies 260 kilometres south of Ulaanbaatar along the main road into the Gobi. It was artificially created in 1942 as an administrative centre, as no permanent settlement had existed on the site before. Mandalgovi is famed for its imposing white equestrian statue of Sükhbaatar and for its provincial museum, which displays Cretaceous dinosaur fossils from the surrounding desert. Nearby rises Baga Gazriin Chuluu, a granite massif up to 1,751 metres high whose caves shelter seventeenth-century Buddhist rock carvings and ancient rock paintings. The climate is harshly continental, with annual rainfall of just 130 millimetres and temperature swings of up to 80 degrees. Salt lakes in the surrounding plain are stopovers for migrating birds.
