The ruins of Ongi Monastery are situated along the banks of the Ongi River in Dundgovi Province, marking the location of what was once a prominent religious hub in the Gobi Desert. Founded in 1660, the monastery originally consisted of two distinct complexes: Barlim Monastery on the north bank and Khutagt Monastery on the south. At its peak, the site supported over 1,000 monks and featured 28 temples along with four Buddhist universities. In 1939, the monastery was almost entirely leveled during the anti-religious purges, resulting in the tragic loss of hundreds of monks. Since the 1990s, local monks have initiated reconstruction efforts, successfully establishing a small temple and a dedicated museum. The extensive mud-brick ruins scattered across the desolate hills serve as a poignant reminder of the monastery's former grandeur and the turbulent history of Mongolian Buddhism.
