Veracruz, officially known as Heroica Veracruz, is Mexico's most important port city on the Gulf of Mexico and one of the nation's most historically significant urban centers. Founded in April 1519 by Hernán Cortés as Villa Rica de la Vera Cruz, it was the first Spanish settlement established on the Mexican mainland. The city is famously honored as 'Four Times Heroic' for its successful defense of national sovereignty against foreign invasions in 1821, 1838, 1847, and 1914. The heart of its social life is the Zócalo, a lively main square where marimba music and the traditional 'Danzón' dance are cultural staples. A key landmark is the San Juan de Ulúa fortress, located on an island overlooking the port, which once functioned as a defensive bastion, a trade depot, and a notorious prison. Veracruz is also celebrated for its lively Carnival, often cited as one of the largest in Latin America, and its unique maritime gastronomy that blends indigenous, Spanish, and Caribbean influences.
