Mitla (Mexico)

Weather…

Mitla, located in present-day Oaxaca, became the most important religious center for the Zapotec people following the decline of Monte Albán. Its name is derived from the Nahuatl word 'Mictlán', meaning 'Place of the Dead', as the city served as a final resting place for Zapotec rulers and priests. Unique in Mesoamerican architecture are the intricate geometric stone mosaics that adorn the facades of the buildings. These 'grecas' consist of thousands of individually carved stones fitted together without mortar to form complex patterns. The city comprises five main groups of structures, with the Column Group being the most impressive. Following the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century, a Catholic church was built directly atop one of the temples to suppress the ancient religion. Nevertheless, Mitla remained a significant pilgrimage site for the indigenous population until the conquest.
