Gżira is a strategically located town on Marsamxett Harbour, situated exactly between Sliema and Msida. The town's name means 'island' in Maltese, referring to Manoel Island which lies directly offshore and is connected to the mainland by a bridge. Gżira developed as a significant residential area in the early 20th century and is today known for its lively waterfront promenade, offering spectacular views of Valletta's fortifications. Manoel Island houses the historic Fort Manoel, an impressive 18th-century Baroque fortress, as well as a large yacht marina and shipyard facilities.
