Ħaġar Qim (Malta)

Weather…

Ħaġar Qim is a monumental megalithic temple complex situated on a hilltop on Malta's southern coast, dating from between 3600 and 3200 BC. As one of the oldest free-standing religious structures in the world, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1992. The builders utilized massive globigerina and coralline limestone slabs, with the largest megalith measuring over six meters in length and weighing approximately 20 tons. The layout consists of multiple C-shaped chambers, or apses, connected by a central passage, showcasing advanced engineering for the Neolithic period. Notably, the temple displays significant astronomical alignment; during the summer solstice, the rising sun shines through an elliptical hole to illuminate a specific inner slab. Famous artifacts, such as the Venus of Malta and various 'fat lady' figurines, were discovered here, pointing to complex spiritual beliefs centered on fertility. Today, a protective tent covers the site to mitigate erosion from the elements while preserving its structural integrity for future generations.
