💡 Tips
- Wear the correct color during village feasts: Green for St. Joseph in June and Blue for St. Mary in August to blend in with the passionate local crowds.
- Visit in February for the 'Spontaneous Carnival,' where locals dress in old clothes and masks to remain anonymous-a unique, centuries-old tradition.
- Find a spot in the main square during feast weeks to witness the 'ġigġifogu' (ground fireworks), which are a spectacular Maltese specialty.
- Locate 'Dar il-Bebbux' (The Shell House) on St. Mary Street; its exterior is mesmerizingly decorated with thousands of sea shells and snails.
- Park on the outskirts near the bypass, as the narrow village core is often closed to traffic or extremely congested during local celebrations.

Għaxaq is a traditional Maltese village in the southeast of the island, celebrated for its authentic character and deeply ingrained religious traditions. The name of the village is believed to originate from the surname Axiaq, a prominent local family in the 14th century. Għaxaq is architecturally significant for its narrow, winding alleys and well-preserved Baroque buildings. A unique local landmark is the 'Shell House' (Dar tal-Bebbux), which features an exterior and interior elaborately decorated with thousands of seashells in intricate patterns. The spiritual heart of the community is the magnificent parish church dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, built in the 18th century with an imposing facade. Għaxaq is particularly famous for its two rival band clubs and the spectacular firework displays they produce during the summer festivities. The village surroundings remain largely agricultural, with olive groves and tilled fields defining the landscape. Despite its proximity to growing urban centres, Għaxaq has maintained its village charm and the peaceful pace of a traditional Maltese rural community.
