Pietà is a small coastal town situated on the shores of Marsamxett Harbour, located just on the outskirts of Malta's capital, Valletta. The town's name is derived from the chapel of Our Lady of Pietà, which was erected in the 17th century. Historically, Pietà played a vital role in the island's healthcare system, being the site of St. Luke's Hospital, which served as Malta's primary state hospital for many decades. The town is also home to Villa Guardamangia, which gained international fame as the residence of Princess Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth II) and Prince Philip between 1949 and 1951. Today, Pietà serves as a major traffic thoroughfare and hosts a popular yacht marina within its creek. The waterfront is lined with elegant 18th and 19th-century townhouses and villas, showcasing the historical prestige of this suburb situated near the seat of government.
