Domvs Romana (Malta)

Weather…

The Domvs Romana in Rabat is a significant archaeological site preserving the remains of a lavish Roman townhouse dating back to the 1st century BC. Discovered by chance in 1881 during landscaping works, the ruins are world-renowned for their exceptionally well-preserved mosaic floors. The peristyle mosaics, in particular, are considered some of the finest examples of Hellenistic art found in the western Mediterranean, featuring intricate geometric and figurative patterns. The current museum was purpose-built over the original foundations to protect the mosaics and exhibits a vast collection of Roman artifacts, including household items, glassware, and statues of the imperial family. These finds provide a unique window into the domestic life and high social standing of the inhabitants of the ancient city of Melite. As one of the oldest archaeological museums in Malta, it remains a vital center for the study of the archipelago's Roman period and cultural heritage.
