The town is situated in one of the country's high-rainfall zones, making it an agricultural powerhouse. Kignan is particularly known for its intensive cotton production, coordinated by the CMDT (Compagnie Malienne pour le Développement des Textiles). In addition to cotton, significant quantities of maize, millet, and fruit are grown here, contributing to the food security of the Sikasso Region. The population predominantly consists of the Senoufo and Bambara ethnic groups, whose cultural traditions shape social life. Historically, Kignan was an important site for exchanges between various southern chiefdoms.
