Fort Margherita is a remarkable feature of the geography and culture of Malaysia. An old fort in Kuching, Sarawak. It was built to protect Kuching from pirate attacks. Built in 1879 by Charles Brooke, the second White Rajah of Sarawak. Named after his wife, Margaret de Windt. It now houses The Brooke Gallery. This site holds particular significance in the history of Malaysia, from the Malacca Sultanate through British colonial rule to independence in 1957. Like many notable places in Malaysia, it combines regional character with the legacy of the multicultural Malay-Chinese-Indian society and the tropics. Thus, this place contributes to the diverse profile of Malaysia, between Kuala Lumpur, Borneo, palm oil plantations and tropical rainforest.

Visiting
Fort Margherita can be visited; it now houses the Sarawak Police Museum. Access is only from the outside as the interior is closed to the public, but the outer grounds are freely accessible.

Since the fort is mostly viewed from the outside, the grounds have no fixed opening hours. The Police Museum inside is usually open on weekday mornings; confirming on-site is advisable.

Photography of the exterior and surroundings is allowed at any time, offering excellent subjects. Inside the museum, photography may be restricted for conservation reasons.

The fort is located on the south bank of the Sarawak River in Kuching, accessible via Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg. Walking from the waterfront or a short taxi ride are the best ways to reach it.
