Development began in the early 1960s, with the first phase (Nkula A) being officially commissioned in 1966. This was later followed by an expansion known as Nkula B to meet the growing national demand. With a combined installed capacity of approximately 124 megawatts, Nkula is the most powerful station in the national grid. It plays a vital role in Malawi's economic development, powering industries and homes in major cities like Blantyre and Lilongwe. Visiting
The facility is in a secured industrial area and not open to the public. From the nearby road bridge, however, the dam wall and outflow channels are clearly visible.
Where to view it
The best public viewpoint is the M12 road bridge crossing the Shire River directly below the power station. From here, one has a spectacular view of the rushing falls and turbine outlets.

There are no direct products from the power station, but local markets in Liwonde and the area sell electrical goods and household appliances. Farmers sell fresh fruit and vegetables along the road.
