Majete Wildlife Reserve (Malawi)

Weather…

Majete Wildlife Reserve, set in the lower Shire Valley, is a shining example of successful conservation and ecological restoration in Malawi. By the late 1990s, the reserve had been nearly decimated by rampant poaching, leaving it devoid of most large mammals. However, in 2003, the non-profit organization African Parks took over management in partnership with the Malawian government, launching an extensive reintroduction program. Since then, more than 3,000 animals have been translocated to Majete, including black rhinos, elephants, lions, and leopards, making it Malawi's premier "Big Five" destination. The reserve covers approximately 700 square kilometers of diverse terrain, ranging from dense woodlands and dry savannahs to the lush banks of the Shire River. Today, Majete is a thriving ecosystem that also prioritizes community development, using tourism revenue to fund local healthcare and education. Visitors can enjoy traditional game drives, walking safaris, and boat trips to observe hippos and crocodiles in their natural habitat.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The dry season from May to October is the best time for the Big Five in Majete Wildlife Reserve. Animals gather at waterholes, and sparser vegetation allows better visibility.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning and late afternoon offer the most active wildlife viewing, especially for predators. Midday heat drives animals into shade, making morning and evening game drives most rewarding.
📜
Etiquette
Stay in your vehicle during game drives and exit only at designated spots. Do not feed animals and avoid sudden movements or loud noises to avoid stressing wildlife.
🎒
What to bring
Good binoculars (8x-10x) and a camera with telephoto lens are essential for photographing the Big Five from a safe distance. Also bring sun protection, a hat, and plenty of water for hot days.
🧭
Getting there
Majete Wildlife Reserve is about 70 km southwest of Blantyre and reachable via the paved M1 road. The final stretch to the main gate is a gravel road negotiable by a normal car.
🦌
What to expect
Majete has high wildlife density, but some animals like leopards are hard to find. Patience and multiple game drives increase your chances; ask guides about recent sightings.
