St. Michael and All Angels Church (Malawi)

Weather…

St. Michael and All Angels Church in Blantyre is a remarkable feat of late 19th-century architecture and a symbol of Malawi's missionary history. Built between 1888 and 1891 under the visionary leadership of Reverend David Clement Scott, the church stands as a masterpiece constructed from local red bricks. Remarkably, the African laborers involved in the project had no formal architectural training and completed the structure without the use of blueprints or spirit levels. The builders utilized 81 different shapes of handmade bricks to create the intricate patterns, domes, and arches that adorn its facade and interior. As a central part of the historic Blantyre Mission, the church is noted for its twin towers and imposing presence. It remains a focal point of worship in the city today, celebrated as a testament to the dedication and incredible craftsmanship of the local people who brought this complex design to life.
