Kapichira Falls (Malawi)

Weather…

Kapichira Falls on the Shire River are a dramatic natural landmark located within the Majete Wildlife Reserve in southern Malawi. Historically significant, these falls were the formidable barrier that halted David Livingstone’s Zambezi expedition in 1859, effectively preventing further navigation upstream toward Lake Malawi. Originally named Livingstone Falls, the site is also a place of historical mourning, as it marks the area where Charles Livingstone, David’s brother, succumbed to disease and was laid to rest. Today, the falls have been harnessed for national development, serving as the site for a major hydroelectric power station that powers much of the country. Despite this modern infrastructure, the falls maintain their majestic allure, with torrents of water surging over ancient rock formations. For travelers, the falls offer an impressive backdrop within a reserve that has seen a miraculous transformation through wildlife reintroduction, making it possible to witness elephants and hippos near the very spot that once challenged explorers.
