Lake Anivorano (Madagascar)

Weather…

Lake Anivorano, also known as Antanimora, is a volcanic crater lake in northern Madagascar deeply rooted in local mythology. Geographically, the lake is situated in an arid region near National Road 6 and is characterized by its nearly circular shape and steep banks. It is famous for its population of Nile crocodiles, which are revered as sacred by the local population. According to a well-known legend, the lake was formed by divine judgment upon a village whose inhabitants refused water to a stranger; the residents were subsequently transformed into crocodiles. Due to this belief, the Antankarana people practice regular sacrificial rituals (Fady) here, involving the feeding of meat to the animals. The lake's ecosystem remains relatively stable as fishing and swimming are strictly prohibited. Botanically, the shoreline is dominated by thorny vegetation and scattered trees that inhabit the volcanic soil. Today, the lake serves as a significant cultural monument and an example of the symbiosis between local tradition and environmental conservation.
