Wolfsschlucht (Luxembourg)

Weather…

The Wolfsschlucht (Luxembourgish: Wollefsschlucht) near Echternach is one of the most spectacular geological formations in the Mullerthal region, also known as Little Luxembourg Switzerland. The gorge consists of towering walls of Luxembourg sandstone that were formed through natural erosion processes along fissures. This geological feature took shape millions of years ago as water and frost penetrated vertical cracks in the rock, causing massive blocks of stone to break away from the plateau. In some places, the walls reach heights of up to 50 meters and host specialized flora of mosses and ferns that thrive in the shady, humid microclimate. A steep path with steps leads through the narrow gorge, offering hikers an intense nature experience between the massive rock flanks. The name is derived from old legends suggesting that wolves once found refuge here. Today, the Wolfsschlucht is a central station on Route 2 of the Mullerthal Trail and a protected geotope of national importance.
