Obeler Wetland

The Obeler Wetland, situated in southern Luxembourg near Bettembourg, covers approximately 15 hectares of protected land. Originally established in 1994 as a compensatory ecological measure during the expansion of the A3 motorway, it has since evolved into a vital sanctuary for local biodiversity. The area features a complex system of shallow ponds, extensive reed beds, and marshy meadows that provide essential breeding grounds for amphibians such as the Great Crested Newt. It is particularly noted for its ornithological importance, serving as a strategic stopover for various migratory bird species throughout the year. Active habitat management, including the periodic removal of woody vegetation, ensures that the open water surfaces remain intact.
