Roman Fort Schaan (Liechtenstein)

Weather…

The late Roman fort in Schaan was constructed in the 4th century AD to protect the strategically significant connecting road between Brigantium (Bregenz) and Curia (Chur). It was part of the Danube-Iller-Rhine Limes and served as border security against invading Germanic tribes. The complex featured a square layout of approximately 60 by 60 meters and was fortified with ten towers, the foundations of which now lie partially beneath the parish church and the cemetery. Archaeological excavations have unearthed numerous coins, ceramic fragments, and military equipment, providing insights into the daily lives of the soldiers stationed here. Following the withdrawal of Roman troops in the 5th century, the area continued to be inhabited, highlighting the site's importance as the settlement core of Schaan. Today, the preserved wall remains are a vital testament to the ancient settlement history of Liechtenstein.
