Built in 1879 by Major Bell, the local magistrate, it served as a vital defensive watchtower during the early British administration of Basutoland. The tower's resilience was tested during the Gun War of 1880-1881, a conflict triggered by the Cape Government's attempt to disarm the Basotho people. Its elevated position and thick stone walls provided a secure vantage point for British forces to monitor the surrounding plains for potential incursions. Today, the tower stands within the grounds of the local police station, preserved as a symbol of the colonial era. Visitors can observe the functional military architecture, characterized by its narrow slits designed for musketry. As one of the few surviving structures from this volatile period, the tower provides a unique link to Lesotho's 19th-century history and the geopolitical struggles that preceded the nation's eventual path to sovereignty.
