Vecpiebalga is a historic village in the heart of the Vidzeme Upland, renowned as a cradle of Latvian culture and literature. It is famous as the setting and inspiration for the first Latvian realist novel, 'The Times of the Surveyors', written by the Kaudzīte brothers. Their former home, 'Kalna Kaibēni', is now a museum that provides a glimpse into the literary history of the 19th century. The surrounding landscape, characterized by rolling hills and pristine lakes like Lake Alauksts, has long inspired poets and artists. A distinctive symbol of Vecpiebalga is the white waterlily, which flourishes in the local lakes during the summer months. The town is also home to Latvia's only porcelain factory, where visitors can see the production of delicate, handcrafted white porcelain and even try their hand at painting it. Vecpiebalga is a place where traditions remain alive, reflected in the annual cultural festivals and local crafts. It is an excellent destination for slow travel, offering peaceful nature trails, cycling routes, and a deep connection to Latvian heritage. It is located about 120 km east of Riga.
