Skrunda is a small town in western Latvia, located in the Courland region on the banks of the Venta River. The settlement was first mentioned in documents in 1253 during the division of Courland between the Teutonic Order and the local bishop. Skrunda gained international recognition primarily for the former Skrunda-1 radar station, which served as a strategically vital Soviet outpost during the Cold War. Following the withdrawal of Russian troops in the 1990s, the military town became a ghost town and was subsequently dismantled. The town center features the Skrunda Manor, an elegant Neoclassical building that now operates as a hotel and event venue. Today, the local economy is driven mainly by agriculture, forestry, and small service businesses. The Venta River provides opportunities for fishing and water-based tourism, attracting visitors from across the region. Every year, Skrunda hosts a folk festival that celebrates local traditions and cultural heritage.
