Priekule is a town in southern Courland, located just 14 kilometers from the Lithuanian border, and is distinguished by its dramatic military history and unique architectural landmarks. First mentioned in historical records in 1483, the area was granted to the noble Korff family, who played a significant role in its early development. The most famous landmark is the Swedish Gate, erected in 1688, which stands as a rare surviving example of 17th-century Baroque gate architecture in the region. During World War II, Priekule was the site of intense fighting known as the Priekule Operation, which resulted in the near-total destruction of the town's buildings. As a legacy of this conflict, it now hosts one of the largest military cemeteries in Latvia, containing the remains of over 23,000 soldiers. Granted town rights in 1928, Priekule has since been rebuilt and functions as a center for agriculture and local administration. The town is situated on the South Courland plateau, contributing to its rolling landscapes and strategic regional positioning. Today, it is a quiet community that honors its complex past while focusing on sustainable local development.
