Daugavas Loki Nature Park (Latvia)

Weather…

Daugavas loki (Bends of the Daugava) Nature Park is located in southeastern Latvia, preserving the most ancient and scenic section of the Daugava River valley between Krāslava and Naujene. The park features nine majestic river bends, or meanders, that cut deeply into the Latgale Highland, creating a dramatic landscape formed approximately 13,000 years ago following the last ice age. The valley is characterized by steep banks reaching up to 40 meters in height and a remarkable degree of biodiversity, including rare plant species and protected birds such as the black stork and the corn crake. Cultural significance is high, as the park encompasses ancient hillforts and traditional settlements like the village of Slutiški, famous for its unique Old Believers' wooden architecture. The preservation of the Daugava Bends from a planned hydroelectric dam in the 1980s was a pivotal moment in the Latvian national awakening and environmental movement. Today, the park is a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage status and stands as a powerful symbol of Latvian natural identity and heritage.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The meandering valley is typically accessed via the regional roads that run roughly parallel to the course of the Daugava river. Several viewpoints and starting points for trails can be reached by car from the nearby regional centers.
📅
Best season
The spirited greenery of late spring and the spectacular golden colors of autumn make these seasons the absolute best times to visit. Summer is also popular for observing the dynamic flow of the river and hiking the shaded forest paths.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The landscape features dramatic high banks, steep slopes dropping down to the river, and dense forests covering the surrounding hills. Trails can be uneven and require navigating significant elevation changes as they follow the river's deep bends.
🎒
What to bring
Good quality hiking shoes with robust grip are necessary to safely manage the steep and sometimes slippery paths along the riverbanks. Bringing a camera or binoculars is highly recommended to fully capture the scenic landscapes of the valley.
🅿️
Parking
Small, rustic parking areas are generally scattered near the most prominent viewpoints and trailheads along the main scenic route. These spots are usually informal dirt lots, so parking with consideration for other visitors is appreciated.
⚠️
Safety
Extreme caution is required when standing near the edges of the high, steep banks, as erosion can make the ground unstable. When hiking the forested slopes, keep an eye out for exposed roots and slippery rocks, especially after rain.
