Alūksne Mound (Latvia)

Weather…

Temple Hill (Templis kalns) in Alūksne is an ancient Latgallian hillfort site that today serves as a significant cultural monument and a popular tourist destination. Located on the shores of Lake Alūksne, the hill was a strategically important point for the local population as early as the 13th century. In 1867, Baron von Vietinghoff commissioned a Neoclassical granite rotunda on the summit, known as the Temple of Glory, which gave the park its current name. The area was transformed into an extensive park during the 19th century, featuring walking paths and scenic viewpoints. Rising approximately 217 meters above sea level, the hill gives sweeping views over the lake and the surrounding Maliena region. The site combines archaeological evidence of early Latvian history with the romantic landscape art of the nobility. Today, Temple Hill is a venue for local events and a symbol of the historical continuity of the town of Alūksne.
