Xaisomboun, also known as Anouvong, is the capital of the youngest province in Laos, created in 2013 from parts of Vientiane, Xieng Khouang and Bolikhamsai provinces. The town lies about 130 kilometres northeast of Vientiane in a sparsely populated mountainous area known for its forests, limestone cliffs and rivers. Historically the region was the scene of heavy fighting during the civil war and remains one of the poorest and least developed parts of the country. A significant share of the population belongs to the Hmong ethnic group, whose villages typically perch on ridges and slopes. The economic backbone consists of hydropower, forestry, mining and subsistence agriculture, supported by a modest amount of small-scale processing and local trade.
