Pak Lay is a small Mekong town in the southern part of Sainyabuli Province, lying roughly midway between Vientiane and Luang Prabang but on the western bank of the river. Historically it was an important trans-shipment point for timber, salt and rice, and during the French colonial period it developed into a quiet administrative and commercial centre, witnessed today by a striking ensemble of well-preserved wooden and stone houses in a Franco-Lao style. Characteristic features include a broad riverside promenade, a small market street and several Buddhist temples with finely carved wooden gables. The town lies off the major through-routes but is reached by boats on the Mekong and by roads from Sainyabuli town and Vientiane, with new bridges gradually connecting it.
