Muang Sing is a small district town in Luang Namtha Province in northwestern Laos, about sixty kilometres from the Chinese province of Yunnan. The town sits on a fertile plateau ringed by mountains at around 700 metres above sea level and was historically an important market on the old caravan routes between Tai Lue principalities, Yunnan and northern Laos. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries Muang Sing was also a centre of the regional opium trade, a legacy reflected in French colonial buildings and a former opium museum. Today the surrounding area is home to numerous ethnic groups, among them Tai Lue, Akha, Yao, Lanten, Hmong and Khmu, whose villages cover the mountains. The morning market, where traders gather in traditional dress, is justly famous.
