Muang Long is a small district capital in the far west of Luang Namtha Province, close to the border with Myanmar in the Golden Triangle area. The town lies in a narrow valley along the Nam Long River, hemmed in by steep, densely forested mountains inhabited by many ethnic minorities including Tai Lue, Akha, Hmong, Khmu and Yao. A well-known highlight is the colourful weekly market in the district centre, where women from the surrounding hill villages, dressed in traditional costume, sell vegetables, herbs, smoked meat and handwoven textiles. The local economy depends on rice, maize, rubber, bananas and sugarcane, often grown under contract for Chinese investors, a trend that is reshaping the landscape. Tourism is also slowly developing through trekking routes.
